What is Kinesiology?

Kinesiology (Kin-easy-ology), as a therapy, originated in the 1960’s, combining aspects of Eastern philosophies with Western methodologies to promote physical, emotional and mental well being.

Eastern theories of energetic systems in the body, such as meridian systems, are utilized in a way that is often likened to the methodologies surrounding acupuncture and shiatzu.  Western methods of working with anatomy and physiology combine with these Eastern philosophies to produce an effective and efficient holistic approach to dealing with imbalances in the body on many levels.

Gentle muscle monitoring enables the kinesiologist to detect and correct these imbalances, using the body’s own innate wisdom and knowledge of itself in a non-invasive way.  The body and mind house an enormous capacity for self knowledge, and the combination of the body’s knowledge with the kinesiologist’s tools for communication with the body, enable an individual to achieve a physically, energetically and emotionally balanced state using their own internal resources.

This unique way of working with the body’s innate understanding of itself, enables each session to be specifically tailored to the individual.  For this reason, every session is different and is also set at a pace that suits the individual.  The session is experienced fully clothed, is very gentle and often creates profound changes to emotional, mental and physical health in a short number of sessions, without the use of drugs.

The techniques used promote the body to a more balanced state, placing the individual in a better position to both heal and grow.

Types of Kinesiology

Various forms of kinesiology exist, ranging from Applied Kinesiology, which is often utilized as a tool to provide assistance in the medical industry, to Professional Kinesiology which is a modality used as an holistic tool in its own right.

Some forms of kinesiology combine with other therapies, such as NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP), to allow focus from another perspective.

What happens during a session?

A kinesiology session is often referred to as a "balance", which is also a descriptor of what the session is aiming to achieve.  As mentioned above, there are many forms of kinesiology, and kinesiologists will work according to their clients needs, so every session will appear different to different people.  It is for this reason that many clients have difficulty explaining to their family and friends exactly what happened in their session.

The following is a brief description of a standard format as used in a session with a Luminous Life kinesiology practitioner:

  • History - on arrival the client and kinesiologist sit together to discuss the client's history.  In the first session a detailed history is taken and for this reason the session will generally run for 90 minutes. In subsequent sessions the history will revolve more around the client's experiences following their previous session and we will discuss any changes that the client noticed, as well as their aims for that day's session.  History taken in subsequent sessions is generally faster and limited to changes since the previous session, so a standard session will run for 60 minutes.
  • Balancing - following the initial discussion the client will lie face-up on a massage table, removing only their shoes.  This part of the session is commonly called a "balance", and will generally follow the format below:
    • Brain integration - because the balance works on the basis that your brain houses knowledge of your body's current condition, it is important to ensure that there are no imbalances in the brain that might lead to confusion or misunderstanding of the body - these are commonly called "switches" in kinesiology.  There are many factors that contribute to your brain being "switched off" - ranging from stress to changes in the weather.  We will all experience this "switching off" at many times throughout our day, and will often experience minimal or no impact from this (other than feeling a little uncoordinated, or "out of it").  However, although we can easily manage our ordinary day in this way, it is important in a kinesiology session to ensure that the information we are obtaining from the brain is accurate.  For this reason the kinesiologist will use many simple techniques to "switch" you back on.
    • Making sure you are present - In the same way that it is important that you are "switched on", it is also important that you are "present".  In kinesiology terms, this means that your kinesiologist will ensure that you are focussed on being in the session and "present" to what is going on during your balance.  If you are lying on the massage table thinking about the meeting you need to have at work the next day, or worrying about an argument you had with your partner last week, then your brain will be distracted, and again, may provide information that is confusing to the session.  This does not mean that you can't feel distracted and worried before attending a session, but it does mean that your practitioner will work with you to help you feel focussed to ensure you get the most out of your balance.
    • Goal setting & balancing - during this part of the session the kinesiologist will work with you to balance you to the goal you have set for yourself.  The goal can really be anything you want - from physical fitness to emotional calm in relation to a particular stress.  Even if you are not clear on what your objective should be - the kinesiologist will work with you to determine the goal that will best meet your needs.  This part of the session deals with your body's response to the stress around achieving your goal, and in doing so enables you to move forward in your life without those concerns holding you back.  This is often the most powerful part of the session, and for this reason most of the balance will be spent working through this phase.
    • Support for the goal - on clearing any stress around the goal, the final part of the balance will look at any further support you may need to achieve your goal - this can range from vitamin supplements, to affirmations, to specific exercises, and will be tailored according to your needs.  This part of the session is often referred to as giving you homework - although in most cases you will have fun doing this kind of homework
  • Session close - once the support mechanisms are discussed, your balance will close, and you will then get down from the table and put your shoes back on.  The final 5 - 10 minutes with the practitioner will give you an opportunity to ask any questions that you have, and to organise another appointment time if you require it.  The practitioner will prepare any flower essences or other remedies that were required for homework, or may talk to you about different types of nutritional support.  In all cases nutritional support is at the option of the client, and the kinesiologist will recommend rather than prescribe.
